I am a little too excited about today's post...
About a year ago I purchased watercolor paints and paper.
I was excited to try something new, something I viewed to be challenging, that I have never done before.
Both items sat in my "to be crafted bucket" for a full year, begging me to work with them,
but I did not have the self confidence I needed to get started.
I saw an advertisement on Instagram for this book and decided it was just what I needed.
Having a picture guide to follow, provided me with some much needed confidence.
I read the "how to work with watercolor" introductions,
watched a few YouTube videos and I felt like I was ready to start.
The articles I read said your hands should be light with soft strokes...
to use a lot of water, often, and how to blend the colors.
One blogger friend suggested I put all my supplies in one basket...I did that.
Get all of your supplies out and ready to go...
Many of my Hydrangeas have several colors in one flower.
I don't love the flower but I thought the leaves came out pretty good.
The Peony was second...
I am having fun but I am not quite sure I like the outcome.
I think I need to be looser and use more water.
They have a lot of different themed books, I also ordered Birds, that did not come yet!

I missed your Saturday Critters so had to go back and peek, loved the picture of the egret and turtles! between your watercolors, knitting and photography, you sure have a lot of talent!
Watercolor is my favorite paint. I took lessons as my 8th grade graduation gift. I should take more time doing it but knitting....you know how it is! You can't do it wrong! Everyone is different and I love what you did. What a great idea to have the book too. Love it. Happy painting!

This watercolor books looks so fun! I tried watercolors once years ago, but did not feel enough confidence to keep going. This is making me think I need to reconsider and try something new too! Thanks so much for sharing!

I think you're doing a terrific job -- especially if you've never done watercolor before. It's a tricky medium (and the water is both the good thing and the bad thing about it! It takes a bit to get the right control). I think you're almost there on your hydrangea and wisteria. You just might want to add in a few more blossoms -- they are so packed, aren't they? I was given a tip that is a good one for flowers with lots of petals like that (try it on a sample page first!) -- use a Q-tip and dot them in, using the basic four petal shape. And yes, you're right about the color variation -- even though it may be all one general color, like purple, the light means that parts will look lighter (more lavender/more water) and parts darker (the deeper purple.) That book looks great. I'm never that comfy mixing colors and it looks like that one really lays it out for you! Cannot wait to see more!

I am so glad that you gave it a try, I would say your doing an awesome job with it, like you said your leaves are really awesome. That was a great find with that book, so glad you shared with us :)
Debbie, I love watercolor... the transparency and simplicity of watercolor pics. Guess I tend to like the watercolor wash. And I do play around with it . It is indeed a tricky medium, but fun. In my experience (which isn't great since I've had no classes), I find putting the colors down in layers (letting them dry between layers - unless you are blending) works best for me.
