The Red Bellied Woodpecker

I get so excited when I see this bird in the yard.
If you are not familiar, this is a Male Red Bellied Woodpecker and it is actually pretty big.
Although I always prefer to photograph my birds in the trees,
- so much prettier -
I have to settle for the deck rail with this bird.
Nuts on the railing of the deck...that's the only way to bring him close to the window.

I am using my "new" camera all the time now, we have actually become good friends.
It took a little time to figure things out, but I am so glad I invested the time.

If you are new to my blog or just wondering,
I take most of my bird pictures from inside my home,
in my home office, through an open window.
That's how these were taken!!

Great shots and can't help but notice the birds stance with his legs so far apart...sort of like a fighting stance...maybe he knew he was being watched:)

they always have that stance, i'm not sure why!!!

Oh my gosh was a sweet cutie, and I think he's been over to read my post today! Why you ask, because it seems he/she is singing! Once you stop by you'll understand! Also, today (I have the day off) and I'm going to spend it out and about with MY hubby today!

Hello Debbie!:) Peanuts always do the trick! Excellent shots, ...I wish we had these birds here, but I only see the Great Spotted Woodpecker, and then rarely on a branch of a tree. Happy Sunday!

That is a beautiful bird. I have had at least one opportunity to see and photograph one of these birds. I am thankful for that.

Their bodies are made for clinging to the sides of trees, pecking at the bark. They're not made for standing upright like most other birds (and humans!). My husband cut lots of holes, with a hole saw attachment for his drill, in a piece of a small pine tree trunk he had to cut down. I make suet and fill those holes with it and hang it from a hook a few inches outside my window using a screw eye (a metal circle) on the end of the log. We must have a nest of them nearby; I've seen juveniles with no distinct colors.

Debbie...the lighting is just simply AWESOME in each and every ONE of these images. And you've managed to capture their personalities in photos/...no, they're not just photos, they're portraits!!! Extraordinary.

And, yes!!! If ever you have multiple posts to share with us, feel free to do so. Any time.
Thanks again for adding your link today at I'd Rather B Birdin'

You always capture amazing photos of birds. I love how you can get good close photos. This bird does have a personality; you can see it in the face.
Always love your bird pictures; and this woodpecker is a handsome one. When we lived in Spokane we had a woodpecker that used to drive me nuts pecking at a metal chimney. It took us forever to get him to leave. We never got close enough to really see what he looked like. Through your photos, I now have an idea of what they look like. Blessings and hugs!

This is a fun series of a somewhat comical (to me in these photos) looking bird.

You are doing fantastic with your camera, I love these pics and love how he has his legs spread so far apart, I don't usually see a bird with his legs spread that far :) You can actually see the red under his body as well!

I love his stance - so cute and yet a little bit awkward, and you captured him so beautifully.
So happy you've settled into your new camera now, you've a wonderful eye for everything that's so lovely in this world :D)
