Saturday Critters ~ 365 ~

The suet at my bird feeding station has been seeing a lot of activity these days.
I have a lot of Downy Woodpeckers but it seems I primarily see males.
Although they look similar, males have a large red spot on the back of their heads,
that the females don't have.
In the last few days, I have been seeing the females too and I have some pictures to share!
They were quite cooperative, just like the males have been.

Mister came in, landed in the same tree, on a different branch...
you can see that his red spot can be seen from the side, even if he is not showing it off.

I also captured these, not so amazing, images of the Red Bellied Woodpecker.
This is a male,
the males crown is completely red, the female has a limited amount of red on her crown.
I see these woodpeckers year round, but have been seeing a lot more lately.
Their back has a ladder like appearance that is very cool!!

I have one that visits my hummingbird feeder...quit a sight how he wraps himself around the feeder to get a drink.

Oh how I love the pictures of the woodpeckers. Beautiful. You are so lucky to get beautiful birds like that. We do get some blue birds but mostly chickadees and sparrows. We got snow today so I had better fill my feeders Take care and Merry Christmas.

It's funny you posted about them because I just saw a couple females come to our suet feeders, saw a male last week and now the females. I haven't seen the red bellied at all this year. We have some stray cats that are coming in the yard again, and I have been chasing them away so I don't know if that is why I haven't seen as many lately. You got some wonderful pictures of them!

Outstanding photos of the Downy Woodpecker and it was fun to see the female one. They do seem to pose for you. I loved the Red Bellied Woodpecker too. Unique design for sure on the back and the beautiful color of the head.
Blessings and hugs!

Beautiful! Both of these are regulars for us, too. The Hairy's make an appearance once in a while.
