Saturday Critters ~ 255 ~

From the time I first started watching and feeding the birds in my yard,
I have always seen
The American Goldfinch.
They visit me sporadically, but I see them in every season.
Of course the males are prettier in the summer,
bright yellow, sporting black caps,
but I enjoy their muted yellow, light greenish color in the winter.

I was in desperate need of a new thistle feeder for them,
and the hubs picked this one up for me.
This is a great feeder and has brought so many more goldfinches to the yard.

This picture was taken on October 15th
and the goldfinch looks to be sporting a little orange as it molts.
If you are interested in the annual plumage cycle of a male goldfinch,
you can read about it and see how it changes each month here.

The American Goldfinch is New Jersey's state bird, how nice for us!

It is a very attractive little bird and always welcome at a backyard feeder. Like House Finches also, they are quite prone to conjunctivitis so it is really important to keep your feeders clean, which I am sure you do.

Hello< love the sweet goldfinches. I was looking for a new thistle feeder, one that the squirrels won't ruin. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Happy Saturday, enjoy your weekend. PS, thanks also for leaving a comment on my post.

I have a similar feeder but smaller, I had them for a little while and then they just weren't coming anymore, so sad. That last photo is especially beautiful!

You always have such lovely feathered-friends stopping by, for treats and photos! Thank goodness too.

loving that feeder! I remember how our goldfinch loved thistle seeds -- and the best part is that the squirrels, jays, and starlings do not!
