A few weeks ago, I signed up for and attended a
Temari Ball Workshop at Arrow Acres Farm given by my friend Liz.
I had no idea what a Temari Ball was, but I really love the classes Liz instructs,
so for me, it was a no brainer.
So here's the skinny...
Temari Balls are a Japanese folk art form, specifically handcrafted embroidered decorative balls.
These balls are made by wrapping and stitching threads around a core,
creating intricate geometric or ornamental designs.
Originating in China and introduced to Japan centuries ago, they were initially toys but evolved into decorative pieces and even accessories for kimonos.
The classes are small, three hours, and Liz is very attentive/hands on while instructing.
So finally...lets get to the pictures!
Liz always provides everything you need, clear instructions, pins, needles and pin cushion...
she even prepared the balls we were working on.
- Aqua Blue, Yellow, Light Blue, Slate Blue and Gray -
This was not super simple but it should have been,
it's easy once you memorize the steps and get into the swing of things.
I have a lot of pictures I took as I was working on this project but I don't think posting them would be helpful and they are a little confusing.

My Garden is doing well...when looking at the garden in its entirety, it looks very straggly.
BUT...
the individual flowers are so pretty.

Interesting, I have never heard of that ball. Your photos are incredible, love your close up shots!
Hi Debbie :)
I have never heard of the Temeri Ball.is it a Japanese art craft? I think the one you made is beautiful but the actual ball sure uses a lot of string!
Debbie I forgot to mention your lovely garden flowers. They are splendiferous.
Beautiful flowers. I was just watching an anime where Tamari ball was mentioned. Thank you so much for including the history. Yours looks gorgeous. So intricate and lovely colours. I am glad Liz is such a wonderful instructor. That makes such a difference when you are learning.

I had never heard of a temari ball but it looks absolutely beautiful. I'm very impressed by the one you made, I have to say!
I have never heard of this type of craft before. Your Temari Ball looks very pretty. Gorgeous flowers!
Such pretty flowers. That is a really interesting ball to make. How fun to learn something new. It reminds me of when I make a basket. i have to just let your hands remember. Same way I have to knit. Let my hands do it. Lovely post Debbie.
Beautiful I have never heard of that before! Very interesting.
My gardens are looking so scraggly I think the haze from the wild fires and the heat and humidity have done my gardens in.

Wow that does look very complicated, it turned out just beautiful. I have some what I call my folkart or country balls, they are torn strips of gingham and plaid wrapped around the ball, I would say mine are a touch easier but no where as pretty :) I feel the same way about my wildflower garden, when I look at it, I feel it is so pretty but when I take pictures of it, looks like a hot mess, LOL!
