I took these pictures on November 1st and decided to save them for my critter post today.
I don't usually see The Great Egret this time of year.
According to my bird book "Birds of North America" the egrets are only present in
southern New Jersey and only during the summer.
I live in Central New Jersey and see a large number of these big birds, all summer long.
Usually by early September, I don't see them again until the next spring.
The Great Egret is a stately, pure white heron like bird, much larger than a Snowy Egret.
Legs are black and bill is yellow...they are mainly silent.
Sexes are similar, they fish in shallow freshwater and use their dagger like bill to catch their prey.
They always know you are present, will most often pose for pictures, and continue to fish.
That's how you know they have found a great spot and do not want to give it up.

Hello,
Beautiful photos of the Great Egret! they really are lovely birds.
I have seen some late sightings of these birds in Delaware at Bombay Hook, maybe it was a warmer winter.
Thank you for linking up and sharing your critter link! Take care, have a great weekend. PS, thanks so much for leaving me a comment.
Such an elegant bird. And great shots as usual. ;-)
I love reading in the bird books and finding out neat things like this. These photos are extraordinary. Thanks again for the kind words of encouragement and the prayers my friend. It's a hard time.
They posed beautifully for you.
The Great Egret is a beautiful looking bird.
Happy weekend wishes.
All the best Jan
Beautiful photos.
Great Egrets are so stately. Beautiful photos!
Merry Sunday my friend! We have lots of egrets here. I left you an answer to your comment on my blog, LOL!
Nice captures. Describing the bill as a dagger is both poetic and accurate, indeed!
A majestic bird!
It makes you wonder if the weather is so far off that it is causing the migrations to be later now, nice you were able to catch him before he heads out!
