Red-Bellied Woodpecker

I heard her first...and the first time I tried to photograph her, she flew away.
She is shy and skittish,
she had not eaten anything so I knew she would come back.
Lights out, window open,
I stood as still as I could...and I heard her again.
She landed on "the branch" and that's right where I had the camera pointed.
I clicked 10 times before she flew off and I about wet my pants,
I knew I had a couple of good ones.

This woodpecker has a very distinctive call, a harsh churrrr.
I know it as soon as I hear it.
This is a female,
the males red patch extends to the forehead, the female only has red on the back of her neck,
and gray above her eye.
I see both males and females daily,
of the birds that visit the feeders, this is the most difficult to photograph.
They only eat suet in my feeding area, but they also like fruit and hulled sunflower seeds.

Red-bellied Woodpecker is indeed a stunning species. Thirty years ago it was a rarity here but now it has become absolutely commonplace as the mean winter temperatures have increased year by year. What is next I wonder?

You're right, they don't hang around long

(I love how they loft straight up in the air)

What a beauty! I have such trouble remembering the proper names for each one, since it doesn't exactly match how they look! lol Hugs!

I would have no hesitation about framing and hanging these! Simply gorgeous! One of my favorite birds, too.

I laughed out loud at the wetting your pants, Greg and I about do the same thing when we catch something we didn't think we would, LOL! You did capture some amazing pics of her. I didn't realize they only come to suet we had a few visiting and then we were having problems with the raccoons and squirrels stealing the suet so I quite for a while this summer putting it out, well I started up again just a week or so ago and you know I woke up the next morning and my suet cage is totally gone, they carried it right away :( Have to figure out to keep my suet secure. Thanks for sharing your awesome catches of these beauties!
