Saturday Critters ~ 226 ~

I am lucky to live near so many parks, lakes,
wildlife sanctuaries and wildlife preserves.
Places where I can take my camera and hook up
with so many interesting and beautiful species of birds and ducks.
Natural habitats where I can connect with nature...where the wildlife is safe and protected.
One of the places I have visited all winter is
Lake of the Lilies
It is here that I had my first sighting of a Killdeer on March 6th.
I went back on April 1st,
saw them again and took these pictures.

This bird is famous for their "broken-wing display,"
in which they look injured in order to distract predators from their nest or young.
They did not display this behavior either time I photographed them.

This is a bird that is familiar to many over much of the continent and is always a very welcome early arrival in spring where I live. The weather has not been especially kind since they returned, but it is a hardy species and will cope with it. Soon they will be nesting and for anyone who has not seen a young Kildeer you have missed a textbook definaition of cuteness!

Killdeers are fun the watch. I stood less than 6 feet from one giving me the 'broken wing' treatment. Nice, clear shots!

They are a favorite of mine! I wish they'd come around here as much as they used to. Possibly too many farms disappearing into neighborhoods have something to do with it.

I love those little guys! Probably it isn’t nesting season right now, so they didn’t need to distract you. I’ve seen them do that thing with the wing and always want to tell them to relax, I wouldn’t hurt their babies for anything. I also can’t help wondering why any birds would nest on the ground ... but there must be a good reason !

I remember loving the photos of those birds that you took before. These shots of the Killdeer are lovely. I like the stripes on the neck. I find nature so interesting in how they protect their little ones. It's all amazing to me.
Warm thoughts and hugs for you!
