Spring...

Spring brings about so many changes here on the home front.
As the grass greens up and the early flowers bloom,
I start to see a lot of the birds that have been missing over winter.
I call them my "smart birds" - the ones who don't hang here for the cold.

One of those "smart birds" is the
Catbird.
It is a beautiful gray, with a black cap...and a reddish-brown under carriage.
Often overlooked, it's not a flashy, colorful bird...
but it has the sweetest personality and the cutest "meeow" call.
At times, it also mimic's the calls of other birds, but repeats that imitation only once,
not 3 times like the mockingbird does.
This bird usually returns around May 1st and will stay with me now until early Fall.

I always think of my friend Theresa in Texas when I see them as it was a favorite of hers.

I wonder if I've seen them here and just thought they were one of our mockingbirds.

What a sweet bird; smart too for clearing out before the cold weather arrives. The call of this bird sounds fascinating. Does it really sound like a cat??

I have some chicks that look just like that catbird. I don't think I have ever seen one before. This is a great shot Debbie.

Awe, tweet, tweet. It's slowly trying to arrive here, and at least we have sunshine today! My tulips are happy.

Such a sweet bird, my friend, and I must say that I don't think I've ever seen a Catbird in person. Thanks for sharing your lovely photos.

You mentioned Theresa, if she should be looking in I hope all is well.

All the best Jan

So cool to read about the Catbird Debbie. I really enjoyed the clarity of your photos... the tiniest pieces of whiskers show too. Theresa is certainly missed :D)

That's a snowbird! Migrating back north this time of year like most of them do (we will do that too, but as with most things, we're just a little bit slower at it than other people).
