Playing With The Blue Jays

Lately, the backyard has been filled with Blue Jays.
I see them year round but they have become abundant these last few weeks.
They will eat sunflower seeds or peanuts in the shell,
but they prefer shelled peanuts spread out on the deck railing.
If I do not provide the latter, they squeal like crazy and let me know that they are not happy.
Here at my house, they are spoiled rotten...
but the nice thing about Blue Jays is they are not shy or skittish and they pose nicely for pictures.

They are known for being bullies but I don't often see that behavior.
I find if I provide enough food for everyone,
everyone gets along well!

Aren't they beautiful?

I suspect that some of the birds you are seeing are migratory. There has been a huge movement from the north this year. Blue Jays exhibit a phenomenon known as leapfrog migration, wherein northern populations overfly resident birds at mid latitudes to winter farther south. As for them being known as bullies, this is simply an anthropomorphic interpretation of avian behaviour. Blue Jays, like all other organisms, are simply doing what they need to do to survive. Enjoy their abundance. They are wonderful birds.

They are one of the prettiest birds!! Wow, that blue and the distinct wing and tail pattern, how lovely and, as always, great shots!

That is funny, our Blue Jays here in TN look a tad different they your area. I found out in Calif. they also have a different looking breed of Blue Jays. I just find it strange that certain type migrate to certain areas in the states. Beautiful pics though. I have noticed the past few weeks a big pick up of birds visiting the feeder, fattening up for the winter I guess.

Blue Jays do not appear in California at all. They are various species of jay, such as Pinyon Jay (Gymnorhinus cyanocephalus), Steller's Jay (Cyanocitta stelleri), more than one species of Scrub Jay (Aphelocoma sp.), even Black-throated Magpie-Jay (Calocitta colliei) near San Diego, in California, which happen to be blue, but which are distinctly different species and are not Blue Jays (Cyanocitta cristata).

They are gorgeous, but noisy suckers. Ours fly south. Go figger. It's been 90 degrees here the last weeks.

The Bluejay is such a beautiful bird. I agree,I have never seen bullying by them. True the smaller birds leave when the Bluejay flies in,but they all get their share.

I think I've only ever come across a bluebird once. Yours are stunning and the photos are fantastic. What kind of camera and lens are you using?

They really are beautiful -- we see these Jays in Florida occasionally. We have two kinds here in Oregon (stellar and scrub) both blue jays but not that Blue Jay (and neither is as pretty).

They are beautiful, and such great lovers of peanuts, if I put them out they will come!

Beautiful blues in the wings! They do have a rep as bullies, but I've also seen them come into the feeders completely silent, grab food, and leave just as quietly.
