This beautiful hybrid duck sat close by, the moderator perhaps, he never moved either.

Great shots of the cormorants. What makes you think the duck is a hybrid? Looks like a Greater Scaup to me.

So funny -- the pictures would be great by themselves, but your words made me laugh out loud -- yup, your guess at what's going on sounds exactly right to me. Just great. (It was nice that the family fight caused them to stand still long enough for some great photos... I wish that would happen to me more often with birds!)
