Saturday Critters ~ 221 ~

On Tuesday, we took a drive over to
Lake of the Lilies
just for a "quick" ride around the lake.
I saw a few posts on Facebook that there were two Killdeer hanging around
and I have never met a Killdeer before.

I was so surprised when I found them on the second lap around the lake.

They were fairly close to the street and did not fly off when we pulled up.
Their actions were very predictable,
they stand and pose for about five seconds and then they scamper around on those tiny legs.
I did not have to get out of the car to take these pictures...
or the other thirty or so that I took.
They are a beautiful bird, dark brown above, white below with two dark neck rings.

When I looked in my bird book it says they are in New Jersey year round,
perhaps they call this lake home!

How great was that, to find the Killdeer and be able to take such clear photos! It certainly has distinctive markings!
Happy Saturday!

Great photos, Debbie. Those birds are here too, though I haven’t been lucky enough to photograph them yet!

Fantastic! I'm surprised you'd never met one. We have them here year round, too. They nest in some odd places. It's neat to watch them use their distraction technique during nesting season.

They are SO beautiful and you always get the best pics....up close with so much detail! The first one we ever saw was in SC! We don't see them often here. Hugs, Diane

We have them a lot in Michigan--usually out in the farmland.
After they nest, if you come too close, they will skitter away, hoping you will follow them and leave their nest alone.

Hello Debbie!:) Super shots of the Sweet Killdeer. Never seen one myself,...only in pictures, and blog images. I'm going to look up if we are able to see them on our shores now.

The Killdeer is a beautiful and distinct bird. I love their call, maybe because it is one of the first to be heard in my area in spring.

Killdeer, Killdeer, Killdeer, is their lovely song. When we moved here in 1989 we had lots of Killdeer and we'd find their nests randomly in our yard. I always made sure to stay clear of them, didn't mow near them. But for whatever reason they became scarce each year and now we never see them here at all.

Wow, I always love the great shots you get of birds. They are always amazing. The Killdeer birds are beautiful. Again, you always capture their personalities in the pictures.
Blessings and hugs!
