The Belmar Sand Castle Contest

It's a tradition in Belmar...

every year, right on the 18th Avenue beach.

D'Jais a local club and the town of Belmar sponsor this wonderful, free event.

The place was packed and it was really hard to get around, but it was so worth it.
Blue skies, fair weather clouds and temperatures in the lows 80's,
there was a beautiful ocean breeze.
We went last year and I about melted, this year, it was cool and the weather was perfect!

Elephant with a Peanut

Fish

Hand with a Face

Octopus

Dog

Mermaid

Turtle

Dinosaur

Hippopotamus

Mom Elephant with Baby Elephant

These were only "some" of my favorites.

The crowds a this event reminded me why we do not go to the beach in the summer.
These people sit shoulder to shoulder, blanket to blanket...
on a Wednesday.
I can't imagine how crowded it must be on the weekend.
We have been enjoying our pool so much this summer and as much as I love the beach,
Winter, Spring and Fall are the times for me to visit!

So...what did you think of those sand castles, beautiful right?
Which one was your favorite!!

What a great idea for a festival. The creations are absolutely beautiful.

Not my idea of fun. I would have been claustrophobic and when I contemplate how much that kind of activity removes habitat for wildlife it saddens me. I don’t even want to contemplate the amount of trash left behind.

Hi Debbie, it is hard to pick a favorite but it would be the elephants. All your photos are great. Always amazes me to see the talent behind these wonderful sandy sculptures.

Wonderful sculptures! I always lament the sea’s effort after.

Hello, wonderful collection of sand sculptures. The Flintstones are cute. Happy Friday, enjoy your day and weekend!

hi eileen...the men who made the flintstones are "professionals", they always do a beautiful job!!

the elephants were AWESOME!!!

Such talented people! The mermaid was definitely my favorite … Here they carve from snow - LOL!!! I can relate to your comment about crowds - my tolerance for crowds is low, especially now that we live in a place that is remote. But I often adjust my attitude, or we wouldn't do anything!!!

The Flintstones were my favorite. What a fun thing to go to but like you I wouldn't want to sit squeezed together on the beach.

it always fascinates me the work people put into creations like this, it truly shows us its the process or the journey of creating that is the joy because the final product lasts for such a short time, beautiful sculptures, I would love to see this,

Hello, what a fantastic series!
My fav is the little Mermaid...I have one in my blog as well, made by someone on the beach.

The Mermaid was my fave. But like R. Mac Wheeler said, a sand castle contest with no sand castles?

Oh, my gosh is was hard to choose. I think I liked the mother and baby elephant. However, the others were spectacular too. I remember your trip here before. It really does look like a fun event to attend even if it is crowded. I love that you are enjoying your pool. We had one when we lived in Las Vegas and it was a lot of fun.
Sending lots of love and hugs!

These are just incredible! I'm lucky if I can make a pile of sand stay put out of a bucket. It would be worth going to see the sculptures, but I agree about visiting more often during the off season.

Very cool, must have been fun to see them in person, I liked the flintstone scene and that dragon is pretty cool too!
Thanks for sharing, I have been to ice sculptures in different areas but never sand displays like this.

I can only imagine how much work it takes to build one of these - but what really floors me are the ideas! How do people come up with them? My favorite - I think - is the Flintstones. But if I look again, it might be the mermaid, or the...

I'm with you - the beach is best enjoyed off season. If I go in the summer, it's just to take a walk in the evening as everyone else is packing up. Avoiding the summer crowds is one of the luxuries of living near the beach - we're spoiled...

your beach people remind me of Florida in the Winter. Not our idea of fun (the beach is definitely NOT why we go there). We like our quiet Oregon beaches -- even in the summer they are nothing like yours ... or Florida's (of course it isn't as warm either, but we don't complain). But I do love the sand sculptures. We saw a similar contest one year when we stayed on the Texas Gulf Coast, it was a lot of fun.

The talent of people never ceases to amaze me! I'd love to visit. However, I'm with you. I don't see the enjoyment of being jammed packed on a beach with strangers! Ewwww! haha!
