Mr. House Finch

The Male House Finch is another bird that is abundant and friendly at our feeders.
Males have a red head and upper breast...
the girls are a streaked brown, minus all the pretty red.

They eat a variety of seed, and favor sunflower seeds and thistle.
They also use the birdbath to both bath and drink.

That is a handsome male indeed. It is a common species here too. I wonder if you know that it was not originally found in the east. It was commonly kept kept as a cage bird because of its beautiful song, and about fifty years ago a number of birds escaped from JFK Airport [I think it was still called Idlewild back then) and it has subsequently established itself in the east. It was originally only found west of the Rocky Mountains. Unfortunately this species is very prone to conjunctivitis.

We have them too. Used to call them Purple Finch, as opposed to Gold Finch.

He is so pretty, we don't see these very often at our feeder, so neat to see such great close up pictures of him. I love the ones of his head tilted!

Why oh why are all the male birdies pretty than the female?? You do see the prettiest birds, Debbie; they must know they are going to have their photo taken. =)

Those were a frequent visitor to our feeders back in Oregon (in our former life) ... you are doing your best to make me homesick today, between the tulips and the finches I remember from our old home. (Well, Oregon is still our home, but we don't get back there in time to see Spring flowers. I might be able to find a house finch ;>)!)

The colors on this little one are beautiful. I often wonder why the males are more colorful the the females. It is so true of ducks. Loved this one! Blessings and hugs~

I have been trying to pay better attention to what species of birds stop by my place now and then. I have a lot to learn!
Mr. House Finch sure is handsome.
