Saturday Critters ~ 333 ~

The Killdeer have returned from winter break.
My bird book says they are here year round, but I never see them.
They are a boldly marked, long legged, noisy plover.
I found this one difficult to photograph as it moved constantly and quickly.
The 2 black neck bands and striking black and white markings on it's face, make it easy to identify.

There is a Killdeer at the lake that has chicks.
I will show those next Saturday if I am able to wait that long.
The babies are super cute!!

so pretty, I was wondering if this one was young just because it's belly is so white, I love those ones that run back and forth as the waves come in, their little legs moving so fast is so cute. I wonder where they hang when you don't see them, nice you get to enjoy them in the summer :) Looking forward to seeing the babies!

I really like killdeer.... if they think their babies are in danger they will run away from their nest while pretending to limp as if they are hurt as they think that will distract the danger from their babies! We watched a nest near us one year when we lived in the Lake .... it was fascinating behavior.
