I was a little surprised to see this Great Egret out in the open at Lake Como.
Fishing at the water's edge this stately, pure white, heron like bird really stands out against the landscape.
Using its dagger like bill to capture prey,
which includes fish and the occasional aquatic mammal or bird.
Sexes are similar,
the bill is yellow and the legs are dark black.
It stood in an almost a frozen state as I approached for pictures,
getting to within 20 feet of this bird, perhaps even closer.
You can see here a little better how "out in the open" it was!

Excellent shots of the egret. I get to see them from time to time on our pond here. Beautiful birds.
Good photos!
Getting that close is amazing.

Fabulous photographs of the Great Egret.
All the best Jan
Your photos are so sharp! What a beauty...just a little scratch and the feathers all lay down perfectly!
He sure is slim and pretty. Looked like it was a great day. Blessings, xoxo, Susie
I don't think we have those around here, but they are similar to our great blue herons.
An elegant bird beautifully captured! :)
An egret was spotted here, an unusual sight for sure. We were in the area this past week but didn’t see it. Great shots, as always, Debbie.
A most magical and serene post, thank you!
so wonderful to be able to get that close, I love the pic that looks like he is itching his neck, I have never got one like that, so cool to see!
