A frequent visitor to the feeders, I feel like I see a lot more males than females.
The sexes are similar, but the boys have a red patch on their upper nape.
I was not sure if this was a male or female...
until she gave me a good look at the back of her head.
No red patch = this is a girl.
My bird book states it is the smallest woodpecker in North America,
that often feeds on slender branches, the males more so than the females.
I see this woodpecker year round, they are rather unobtrusive,
easy to observe and easy to photograph.

A charming and common visitor to be sure. In other parts of the world this species would be part of a group known as pygmy woodpeckers.
Hello, They are cute woodpeckers. I see a pair of them at my feeders often. Happy Sunday, have a great new week ahead.
They are here year round too. Love those little creatures!
They make rare appearances in my garden and I haven't been able to capture any decent photos. Yours are amazing Debbie, loved each of them.
Beautiful! We have several of these around and we occasionally get visits from the larger Hairy.
Beautiful! I enjoy seeing these birds around all year.
Great pics, I love that last pose you always get such great angles on them, that looks like the ones we get here, we get equal amounts of the male and females. I can't get over how long and thin her claws are.
Beautiful shot Debbie.
She’s so sweet! They look like fluffy toys!
What a beautiful bird. I love the pattern of colors. She does look so sweet. You captured this one perfectly.
Blessings and hugs!
A lovely bird well photographed Debbie
You didn't mention how they are such cutie patooties.
...trying to catch up.
What a sweet little bird, love the pictures! It's a treat visiting your blog and seeing all the great shots you get. I swear, many of "your" birds seem to actually be posing for you, LOL!! I liked seeing the turkeys on the last post too. Just goes to show, you never know WHAT is going to come strolling up outside, ha ha LOL. Hope y'all had a real nice weekend. Do you have many flowers planted yet and will you have the pretty mailbox garden this year, it's one of my favorites!
Beautiful captures here Debbie, such a lovely bird.
All the best Jan
Debbie - very good pictures of the downy. Like you, I see many more males than females. The ones around here tend to land on a tree near the feeder, take a good look around and then fly to the feeder. Have a great week!
What a lovely critter!
I do not think it lives in my part of the world...
What a cute little one. They are such a joy.
