I have two Mourning Doves that hang around my feeders,
and I have always wondered why they are called "Mourning" Doves.
Mourning being an expression of deep sadness,
mine surely don't seem sad.
They make the loveliest "cooing" sound
and always hang out and sleep on the rails of the deck.
They enjoy the bird bath for both drinking and bathing.

The ruffled feathers look like they are just awake and not ready to greet the day quite yet! Love those doves! They make a lonely sound I think.

Beautiful captures! I have about six that come to my feeders. When not at the feeder they're resting on the power lines and cooing! I agree, they have such a lovely, peaceful sound. Here's a thought, maybe their cooing brings comfort to those who are mourning.
"Mourning": because their low cooing sounds like someone softly crying.
I love them--my sister hates them as they make her sad--plus, she has a phobia about birds.
The cooing does sound like mourning crying, depending upon the time of year!

These are such pretty pictures of the doves - one of my favorite birds. Maybe they are called mourning because their cooing could sound sad, but I think it just sounds calm and pleasant. :)

I have heard of people who don't like the cooing of theMourning Doves. They seem to think it sounds sad. I love it.It is relaxing and gentle.You have great pictures of these pretty birds.

The photos are lovely as always. I really like the Mourning Doves. We had one nest in our front tree a few years ago and I loved watching them through the process. I looked up on line more about these sweet birds and it was fascinating.

How neat that they feel so comfortable at your deck that they feel like they can take a nap, we haven't had any take a nap on our deck, I can understand when we had our cats and dog but they are gone now. I would like a bird bath in our yard too I think, maybe I will have to be on a look out for one :)

I always thought they were called that because their cooing sounds kind of mournful. We have some that hang around our place in Vermont. I enjoy the cooing for a while - but then become tired of the repetitiveness. That's just me - I'm funny about sound...
I was walking to the mailbox yesterday and I saw the tiniest one, just sitting in the grass. Your shots are so pretty. I love how you can get so close. Is that your new camera?
Such great portraits! They're our wake up call here in the early spring -- I don't seem to hear them as often now -- maybe they've moved up the coast to your house. I agree that they sound happy; I love it. For a long long time I was sure it was "morning" doves because that was mostly when I heard them. (I'm talking way after I was old enough to know better, after I had a bunch of bird books and everything. I finally figured it out.).
The name comes from the mournful sound of their cooing. I called them morning doves for a very long time. A lot of people do.

These are my very favorite wild birds, Debbie.
We have several of them here.
I love the sound they make, and they seem to get along with all of the other birds, unlike some others like the Blue Jays.
