I have been puttering outdoors a little as well,
always happy to find cool wildlife to enjoy and share with you here.
Lake of the Lilies
is a great place, always filled with a lot of birds and interesting wildlife.
We almost always see Killdeer when we visit.
These are new pictures of them, I did not see any babies or tweens.
This Killdeer was alone.

Next we saw this large Box Turtle.
In trying to identify it further, there are so many species, I learned a lot about turtles.
After reading here, I believe this may be a
Northern Map Turtle.
Maybe a female, you can see she is making a hole/nest behind her,
a place to lay her eggs.
Turtles lay between 6 - 20 eggs per clutch, once per year.
Someone is planting trees all around Lake of the Lilies,
I think they may have a Homeowners Association,
for those living on the lake.
It is a Nature Preserve, some of which you cannot walk on.
I assume they are trying to block the view of the wildlife in the lake,
they do not take kindly to people with cameras.
I primarily stay in the car, using the car door to steady my hands.
We came home to a front yard filled with bunnies,
they do not eat my flowers, only my grass.

The turtle was a fun sighting! And I love the Kildeer and cute bunny too. You've had a good week. I've seen more wildflowers on my hikes than wildlife. The critters are too hot to come out and play! lol Happy weekend!
Hi Debbie, We have killdeer around here. They can make a lot of racket when their little ones are just emerging. :) That turtle would scare me, as I do not know which ones are snapping turtles. They are faster than people realize too. He does look pretty though. I like taking pictures when I get a chance and I would never photograph anyone privacy on purpose. LOL. The Killdeer is so cute, they have the sweetest eyes/faces. Great sighting of the turtle, I have to research the Northern Map Turtle. I have never heard of this turtle, it would be new to me. I saw a rabbit and a Killdeer recently but I’ll never see a turtle here. Sigh. Great photos Debbie.

I always love to see turtles in the wild - it seems like a good sign that the environment is improving.
Beautiful shots, Debbie. I especially love the ones of the bunnies. And I could be wrong, but I don't think that's a box turtle, but a water tortoise - possibly a red slider. We have a lot of box turtles in our yard - but of course I'm not familiar with all the different types.
that is so interesting. i have read...i have looked at pictures, read some more and i really have no idea what this is and i had no idea that there were so many varieties! if you click on the link i shared, it does look like a northern map turtle BUT i have zero expertise in the field!! i'm nor sure i have even heard of a water tortoise!! but thanks, i always appreciate kind help on correctly identifying these critters!!

Beautiful killdeer and turtle! It's been a long time since I've seen a wild turtle. I've never seen one preparing a nest. I'm not a huge fan of HOA's, personally.

wow that turtle is a good size one isn't it, love the bits of orange and the green streaks it has on it's body, didn't seem to scared.... that is so sad when you get blocked from seeing the lakes, but at least they are flowering trees, always good for a picture :) We came home last night around 9:30 and was surprised to see a bunny out in our front yard, I think they like the ornamental grass we have planted i the front yard.
Lovely Killdeer photos, then the turtle ones were awesome. I loved the up close and personal on of the turtles face. I liked the facts you gave and will look up more. I do find Turtles interesting. My brother had one for years. I enjoy the photos of your bunnies. You are blessed they don't eat your flowers. We had them in Spokane and they ate all my pansies one year.
I'm happy you could get good photos, sad that some of the beautiful places on earth, don't allow photos or make it easy to get them.
