Saturday Critters ~ 283 ~

On a recent trip to Lake of the Lilies,

I was very surprised to see a Lesser Yellowlegs.
This is an elegant wading bird with long, very bright orange-yellow legs.
It's bill is thin, long and straight.

I was also surprised to see the Least Sandpipers as well...

there were so many, you can see in this picture, just how tiny they were.

They moved a lot more and a lot quicker, they were very difficult to photograph.

I saw a lot of great wildlife today that I will share pictures of in the upcoming days!

Many thanks to David at Travels With Birds for helping me to identify these birds correctly!

Hi Debbie: Your first bird is Lesser Yelllowlegs, the smaller ones are Least Sandpipers. Great shots! These birds are on their way to the Arctic to breed.

thanks david, for your kind help. in my book, they look identical but the legs really give this guy away. the solitary has yellow legs but the lesser's legs are a much brighter yellow. i did a bit of research on this one, and i thought i had it right but your i.d. is correct. thanks for your help. debbie

They are beautiful and so hard to ID! I hope someone can help me with a baby bird I saw this week. Love seeing that loose white feather. Nature is amazing! Enjoy your weekend! Too hot to hike today! Boohoo! Hugs!

Doesn't God have a sense of humor to put such flashy legs on a rather plain bird:)

The shore birds are such wonderful creatures but the small ones are fast. Great photos, Debbie.

Both the Lesser Yellowlegs and the Least Sandpiper look good to me :)
