I had time to get out last week, but it was rainy, cloudy and gloomy every single day.
On the 26th we saw all of these Loons.
I think these are Common Loons but they had a lot of brownish-red in their heads and necks.
Perhaps these are first winter Loons.
Loons are elegant waterbirds, with a long, pointed bill...sexes are similar.
It is comm to see them here in winter, but this was my first sighting this winter,
I have seen them in previous years.
There were so many Gulls flying about and taking in the view.
There were quite a few Red Breasted Mergansers, both the Females above...
and the Males below.
This female had the catch of the day...or at least she thought she did.
She really struggled with it, finally swallowed it and caught another

Wonderful pictures we have loons here on our lakes in the summer but they leave in the fall because our lakes freeze over in the winter.

I always enjoy seeing the Loons! The Mergansers are another favorite.
They do not go hungry, lots of fish to eat. Great collection of photos.

Loons are a fascinating bird. Between their call and watching them swim underwater, they bring back a lot of memories of fishing in Ontario.
Those loons have the prettiest heads I think, the pointy heads on the mergansers are pretty cool too. Good to hear she was able to get that fish to eat it after all that trouble :)

oops, the merganser I meant -- I do know the difference, was just thinking about how I never see loons. (I never see mergansers eating dinner either tho ;>)
