We recently drove to Sandy Hook to see the Harbor Seals that have been calling the area home since Christmas.
Fort Hancock at Sandy Hook is a former United States Army Fort,
and is now a National Historic Landmark.
So the bonus was to see and photograph the seals, and to explore and photograph this former Army Base.
This site was selected for the base to protect and defend the coastline here and the New York City Harbor.
The Base was once bustling with service members and their families who lived here.
A few of the buildings have been restored, most have not.
A contractor was hired and some effort was put into restoring some of the buildings and homes.
But there was such a debate over whether the homes should be sold or rented,
I'm not really sure where things ended up!!
Most of the chimneys have these huge osprey nests.
Battery Potter
with a bonus deer, they were everywhere.
We have not seen many sunny days, these pictures would have been much better had the sun been out,
and the sky been blue.
But the weather was great otherwise, it was warm and it was not raining.
I have been here before and this is a really cool place to visit and take pictures.
I will show you the seals tomorrow!

Debbie, both you and your hubby have such great smiles in your pics! It makes me smile to see you both.
Looks like a very interesting place.
so very sad to see the houses decay when there are so many people who could use a home now days.
Great pictures of the fort

What a wonderful adventure. I would love to see the seals, but I guess they will be gone when I get back to NJ in June!!
Beautiful homes, but all I see is the maintenance they need. Too much work for this old-timer!
Lovely photographs of you and hubby.
Those nests look amazing, as do the buildings, and always nice to see a deer.
All the best Jan

Fascinating place to visit! Love seeing you in the photos!
Hello,
Sandy Hook sounds like a great place to visit.
It is cool to explore the old structures.
Neat capture of the deer in front of the battery.
Great photos of you and your hubby.
Take care, have a happy weekend.
I thought it must have been warm the way you are dressed, it is hard to imagine since today we have 4 inches of snow and it has only reached up to 20 degrees so far, not even going to get above freezing today.
It is always interesting seeing the old places, cool pics!
Wonderful series! If I had more money than dirt I would go around buying these old properties and restore them. Always sad to see them go.
