Huston, We Have A Problem...

A Hawk Problem

I will admit he is beautiful,
that the first time I saw him I was more then elated.
But now I am over him.

He is wreaking havic in the backyard,
with all my cute little feathered friends.

He eats my little birdies...

then he prays for more.

He is starting to come closer to the house, here he is about 30 feet away.

I was so excited earlier in the day,
when I first saw him and took this picture.
I didn't even see the bird he was holding on to until I loaded the pictures.

I get the whole circle of life thing but this is really hard for me.

On a happy note, the snow does look beautiful, doesn't it??

Makes for great pictures, but I do understand how you feel. I know these larger birds need to eat too,but they could do it somewhere other than at my or your feeders.

He eats other birdies oh no. That is a sad note.

Bummer. My cat killed a bird about 2 weeks ago and I know he's doing his cat job, but I wish he'd stick with mice and moles.

i'm wondering if you have 2 different hawks preying on your birds. the last pic looks like a red-shouldered hawk, based on the red chest. the other maybe a young coopers? based on the striped chest feathers. hard to tell.

Oh no! That would freak me out. He is a beauty but I can understand your plight! Here's some ideas.

Oh wow, those are incredible photos of the hawk but I sympathize with you as I know how you feel. It's hard but they have to survive too and as you say it is the circle of life. I get a hawk in my garden off and on and though I love it, I am always glad he moves on. Have a great week :)

The hawk is beautiful, but so are the birds he is eating. I hope he leaves soon.

The snow does look beautiful - and hunting birds should only be allowed out at night....so we can't see them.

The snow looks very beautiful! I can understand about the hawk. It's hard to see the pretty birds being preyed upon. Not sure what you can do about it.

I agree with Theresa,it does look like it could be two different hawks. Which makes an even a bigger problem. I had one that terrorized my yard for months, then finally disappeared.

That's a lot of snow! Beautiful shots!

They are great shots but they are not nice to have around your friends. When I have them start showing up I am a basket case because I do know how much damage.
I hope he decides to move on soon.

That's a hawk for you. Beautiful and deadly. You are right, the snow is beautiful!

Debbie, the hawks are cool to see! I am with you though. I would be happier if they were not in my yard. Your photos are awesome!

Oh those poor wee birds - nature can be cruel can't it?
Your snow is looking beautiful. I bet it is really cold though. Keep warm!!

I think he's beautiful, but predators are not welcome at my house either! I have some birds, I think they may be starlings, who swoop in and gobble up the suet as fast as they can and then start on the other food. They chase off all the other birds. Grrr.
The snow is pretty and it looks like you got plenty of it, too. Stay warm!

Debbie, I understand! I, too, understand there is a "circle of life", but sometimes it really stinks. I have had a hawk in my yard for years. Often my bluejays gang up on him and chase him away. Bonnie

So sorry your little birdies are being preyed upon....I wouldn't like that either.....I never know how to handle this circle of life thing...I don't like for anything to have to die....

Kmcblackburn said...

Oh boy, those things can be vicious. When my dogs were little pups I wouldn't let thm in the yard themselves because I was afarid one of the hawks would swoop down and grab one f thm.

Lin said...

Oh, those are nasty birdies to have in your yard. I hate the mess of feathers they leave...reminding you of the harsh birdy life. :( No, they are not welcome here either.

I'd actually be happy to see a hawk that close! For whatever reason, I rarely have those kinds of photo opportunities. He's very handsome. I understand the bird eating, though. That would get old fast!

Bev said...

Sorry... but you made me laugh.... I won't say know more... I understand...

It is so hard -- but they've all gotta eat. Amazing captures Debbie and the snow is lovely.

Oh no, Debbie!
We had this problem last summer, and unfortunately it lasted for quite a while. I hope he goes away soon. I feel bad for all you wonderful little feathered friends.

The snow is so pretty in your photos. We have so many hawks in our area but none seem to have claimed our property as their territory. When they show up, our rooster calls all the hens to shelter. And "our crows" call out their alarm and start chasing them away. Maybe you need to hire a pair of crows?

Beautiful Photos. I've some Hawks and Falcons in our burbs too in SW, PA!

Found you off of A Rural Journal -
Thanks.

Beautiful header!
I'm having the same problem with the hawks. They have been hunting snakes with their youngster, but the other day one was chasing our Mama Squirrel and her baby in the Oak tree. It was crazy! It didn't get them, but they come back everyday and are after our birds and squirrels. I've been chasing them off.
Happy days to you! Good luck!

I know just how you feel on this one. We had a cute little nest with a mother bird and three little babies. I felt like they were protected but they were not. I lost them to a stray cat. I was so upset.
I do love the pictures of the hawk and the snow is beautiful.
Blessings!

Oh poor little birdies. It is sad but I do think the Hawk is a very handsome bird. He just needs to go somewhere else for his meals.
