Up close and personal with a...
Northern Flicker
This is a very special visitor for me.
Over the past few years I see this woodpecker one day,
each fall and never see him again until the following year.
I thought perhaps I had missed him this year but then I saw him on December 17th.
There he was on the suet feeder and he wasn't budging.
I watched and photographed him for several minutes.
I could not get a flight shot but I wanted to share this image,
showing off his bright yellow under-carriage.
In flight, the pop of yellow is hard to miss and absolutely stunning!!
I have not seen him again, till next year my friend.
I am super excited to be joining in with Eileen over at
for Saturday Critters.

Debbie, your closeups of the Yellow-shafted Flicker are awesome. It is weird you do not see it more often. I would be happy if they came to my feeder. Thanks for sharing on Saturday's Critters. Enjoy your weekend!
Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Love that colorful Flicker especially the butt shot :)
I'd love to see one here.
Be well, be happy, Debbie :)
Hey, That is a mighty close up Debbie. A real nice bird to have hanging from your feeders.
i LOVE these birds. yes, that yellow flash is unmistakable. but i love the way the dots on their chest seem to float. love...
Gorgeous shots of this beautiful bird!
We see them here in the summer. They have such interesting coloring.
Wow, have not been so close up before, he is stunning that's for sure! Also I've been enjoying your sight-seeing trip around Wash. What fun! Happy Holidays to you cute tourists!
He is such a handsome bird. I am glad he comes to visit you each year.
Beautiful colors you caught!
I have several that call my feeder home - and not one of them will stay put long enough for me to get such wonderful pictures. Great job.
Magnificent macro shots of the beautiful bird ~ thanks, Happy Christmas to you ~ carol, xxx
Great shots of this pretty guy! I wish one would visit my feeder.
This is one beautiful bird. The yellow and the red against the polka dots makes for such a wonderful contrast. Maybe one day I will get to see a Flicker.
Amazing pictures. Did you notice that some of the black spots look like a heart?
The bird is beautiful!
We wish you a Merry Christmas,
RW & SK
Beautiful bird, he doesn't know what he's missing by showing up once a year. I have the same thing with indigo buntings. One day every spring, for a day then gone till next year!!!
Very nice photographed Debbie.
Wish you and your dear ones a Merry Christmas and all the best for 2014.
Greetings, Joop
What wonderful wonderful shots of this little beauty! :)
Absolutely amazing!!!
Wow! Amazing photos of your feathered friend. I'm glad you were able to see him again this year.
I would like to imagine if the feeder can swing, and the bird will swing, and swing...
Beautiful bird and so original.
Debbie, I wish You a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year !
He's fabulous. We have one that visits every spring. I've named him "Woody" and he always returns to the same telephone pole to peck away every year. Never have gotten a decent picture though as I don't have very good zooming capability. Loving that "yellow" pop.
I see your "friend" came to visit :))
Very good the last photo, Debbie!
a hug.
I think they are such elegant birds. Wonderful shots all!!
WONDERFUL photos, Debbie! You captured such beautiful closeups. I love those dots on his chest. He's awesome.
These are fantastic, Debbie! You can see the feather patterns which are pretty amazing! We have Flickers in KY, but we don't see them at our feeders. You have some awesome shots and the butt photo made me laugh!
Have a very Merry Christmas!
