What Happened To The Baby Swans...

If you have been following the "Swan Story" and have been wondering how it concluded,
it does not have a happy ending.

I have written about these Mute Swans and this swans nest many times...

I shared these 2 pictures in my entry on May 9th when she first showed me her eggs.

When I called out to her, she lifted up off the eggs, to show me all of them.

Once I found the nest and saw the eggs, I tried to check on them every day or so.
The nest is only about 10 minutes from home, on Glimmerglass Lake,
right off of Debbie's Creek, true story...how cool is that?!

When I visited on May 18th, the nest was abandon...

I counted 4 eggs still in the nest...
mom and dad were nowhere to be found and believe me, I searched.
A woman passing by stopped
and said she saw 2 cygnets the day before but was also surprised to see the other eggs abandon.

I went back several times and on May 26th,

the couple greeted me by the side of the road, they were alone.
Swans are extremely intelligent and remember everyone they have "met".
I spoke softly to them and they swam gently as I spoke.
I was less than 5 feet away...I told them I was sorry about the babies.

The nest is empty now...
what a heart break for these 2 Mute Swans
who spent so much time and gave so much love to try and have a family.

I said goodbye, but I will go back to see them and visit for a spell.
I know this is the circle of life but this was a real heartbreak for me and I am sure for them too.

I hope to be back to writing regularly, fingers crossed!

Wonder if a bad critter stole 2 of the eggs and really scared the parents. Kinda surprised the bad critter or his forest friends haven't come back for the unguarded remaining eggs. Bummer. At least the parents have you for a friend. Linda in Kansas

Debbie, I hate it when things like that happen. But I try to remember that nature can be harsh. We do what we can to help, but sometimes we just have to accept. They may try again... and hopefully next time may be better. I feel they appreciate your concern...

Hey Debbie. I’m not sure why my comment is not linking to my blog. I have been having issues with blogger. Not sure if you got my first comment but thank you for updating! Sad! 😞

That is really sad. Understanding that it is the way of nature and accepting are two different things. It is good that you got to see the parents and were able to talk to them. Take care!

Aw! That is so sad, Debbie. Hopefully they will try again in a safer area. Life is so hard for the wild things these days. All we can do is try to help them along as best as we can, and educate people, like you have done. x K

The lilac color palette you have put together is so cohesive. I have been looking for the right lavender shade for my living room and this gives me a great starting point.

Oh what a sad ending for them

Truly a heartbreaking end for both the swans and you, Debbie. This last week, a lone swan has appeared in the Nashua River and we are wondering about its mate as we know they mate for life. I didn’t know a swan would respond to a human voice.

So sad. we had a similar thing happen. A duck layed eggs on our property and diligently sat on them. Then one day, the mom was gone and the eggs were abandoned. We worried the mom was hurt or had died. So sad.
