My bird book says the House Sparrow is widespread and familiar across North America.
I say they are hard to miss.
Most photographers don't photograph them for those reasons and because they lack color.
I take pictures of them "for" those reasons and because they have a beautiful feather pattern.
They have an affinity for people and are not easily threatened.
Sexes are dissimilar.
I took these pictures of the House Sparrows when I was down by the inlet in Point Pleasant.
A large group of them were sitting on old crab cages.

most of the birds at my feeder are house sparrows. You're right -- they are hard to miss!

In the St. Louis area we have Eurasian Tree Sparrows which never spread across the country after being introduced here in 1870 from Germany. They have a chestnut cap, white cheeks with a black spot and are a little smaller than the house sparrow. They're plentiful, but the house finches seem to be taking over.

I love these little guys for the same reasons you do -- and especially because watching them make homes in the birdhouses in our daughter' and son in laws huge black walnut tree was something she and I enjoyed together. Beautiful memories.

Here in the UK, unfortunately their numbers are still dropping in England. The Breeding Bird Survey data indicates recent population increases in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland though, so that at least is good.

House sparrows are what I have the most around the feeders and I love watching them and they have different markings too! Great pics!
