Is It Butterfly Season?

It sure feels like butterfly season here at the Jersey Shore.
I have seen more butterflies this summer than ever before.
After making the public aware of the decline of the monarch butterfly, butterfly enthusiasts have jumped in and participated in "saving the monarchs".
This summer, with help from all involved, there has been a 67% increase in the monarch population.
The monarchs are captured and tagged in Cape May County, New Jersey.
Now, there is an elaborate tracking system in place that was adopted when the decline was noticed.
 Additionally,
there has been a steady increase in the monarch population
every year since the decline was first recognized.
By increasing awareness in the laboratories, garden centers and on television, things have changed.
Bringing awareness to the public, has helped increase the numbers of monarch's buzzing around.

- Cloudless Sulphur Butterflies -

- Eastern Tiger Swallowtail Butterflies -

- Black Swallowtail Butterflies -

This is the type of butterfly I raise...I have released more than 50 during this past summer.
In addition, I have at least 50 Black Swallowtails in Chrysalis form right now.
They are in netted cages...
they will spend the winter with me and I will release them in the spring as they emerge.

It feels like "Butterfly Season" - I am seeing such a great number of butterflies,,,in all varieties, as they migrate south for winter.
In the last week, I have released 3 of my own.

So why not join in, plant some milkweed and help to further increase the numbers of butterflies in the sky!
Some additional information can be found "here" if you are interested.

Wow! Beautiful butterflies. Unfortunately, there are very few of them left in Poland now. The most common ones are Large Whites.

Best regards, and I invite you to take a look at my new painting :)

They must all have spent the season at the shore. There have been very few here in central NJ.

These are gorgeous. The only ones I've seen are Monarchs and a small white one (that might be a moth!)

I'm so impressed with you, Debbie, for raising butterflies. I worried about their decline and here I have a friend who is helping out with the solution.

Your photos are exquisite of the butterflies in the flowers.. My friend raises butterflies and has released over 30 so far. I went over to help her on release day of about 12 of them. It was exciting. One flew onto my shoulder and just sat for a while before taking off.

Your photos are beautiful. That's awesome that the numbers have increased so much. It must feel very rewarding to raise butterflies and then set them free

Good for you, Debbie, in helping to increase the butterfly population and sharing these facts and beautiful photos. We would see many of these same ones at our VA home where ourselves and neighbors had flower gardens. Unfortunately, here in Nashua, NH, I have seen very few this year.

Debbie, it is so good to see you here. I'm so glad you're here. I am sorry for the summer flareup (not a good description but the best I can do at the moment) but glad you were able to work in some fun stuff before and between your 'adventures" You sure didn't forget how to use your talent for sharing - I always feel like we've been along for the experience. Thanks.... I've been missing in action almost all summer (for boring reasons )-- I did see your post 'bee back soon' at some point and have been thinking of you So so glad that I came back today -- I read every post and loved every minute. Thank you. Your lovely words of wisdom posts say everything I want to tell you only better than I could --- just so glad to see you here!

Good for you, doing your part to bring them back, I have seen a few more around here this year, maybe it is the flowers we have in the wildflower garden I have.

Yes, it appears as though it is butterfly season! Our property would not grow milkweed but I have seen some in the ditches around here and think of you when I see it!
