Saturday's Critters # 413

I found a new spot for photographing wildlife.
A little further from home,
this lake is bigger and I have been seeing some great ducks and large birds here.

As soon as the Great Blue Heron spotted me it started to walk,
briskly...

I really like this image showing off it's big feet.
The herons are here all winter, wherein the egrets migrate south.

I also saw this...

American Wigeon
This duck is present here only in winter and I rarely get to see one.
This adult male has a striking head pattern, with it's green stripe and creamy white forehead and crown.
Body plumage is mainly pinkish/blush.

And this little one that I believe to be a

Pied-Billed Grebe
According to my bird book this Grebe is here year round but I never see it.
In winter it's plumage is orange buff, particularly on it's neck.
All of that is difficult to see in this picture.

It is a beautiful lake that we will definitely be returning to!

  1. Debbie that is a wonderful birding spot!!!! Thanks for sharing. your fantastic pics. We used to have pie-billed grebes on the Lake where we lived in Oregon. And I think in all the seasons we stayed there I managed about three pictures. Lots of pics of the water where they "used to be" though.

  7. Those are beautiful birds. I'm wondering how the heron survives the winter compared to the other skinny-legged birds. (Pretty sure they don't wear the latest style of leggings....just had to say that.) Linda in Kansas

  9. Hello Debbie,:=) Your Heron captures are perfectly focused and show off all its features brilliantly, I also like the their large feet. The American Wigeon is a beauty, and the grebe a very sweet bird. This new place looks like a good place for birding. I enjoyed your photos very much.:=)
