A Friendly Red-Bellied

I love Red-Bellied Woodpeckers
but I find them to be extremely skittish.

This Spring a male has been visiting, that loves to pose for pictures!

Here you can see his pretty red belly.

On the male,
the red patch extends all the way from the neck to the forehead.

He prefers sunflower seeds,

but was perfectly happy to share the peanuts with the Blue Jays.

These pictures were all taken on May 15, 2013.
I have so many pictures of him now,
I don't even get up when he comes to the feeders.
I think he's mad at me!

My purple azalea's are in full bloom all around the deck right now,
providing the beautiful purple backdrop you see in these images.

Happy Sunday Everyone!

  3. Gorgeous shots! That's one intense beak...and I LOVE the red coloring. Sometimes you just look at something in nature and just know you can't recreate it! {the purple background was not lost on me - you must be in purple heaven!}

  15. Another post of awesome pictures. I love the close ups of this one.
I wish we lived in a an area where we had birds like these close by. We do have some Geese with their goslings across the street. My husband is trying to get some good pictures I can post.
    Blessings!

  16. Debbie, he is adorable!
I don't think I've ever seen one that small.
I have a real big fella (don't know what kind), who has been spending a lot of time in my neighbor's tree. I actually like the sound, but not at 5:30 in the morning! :-)

  20. Your RBW appears smaller than ours, but maybe that's just an illusion. He's a pretty boy.
