Male Northern Flicker
This is only the second time I have seen this woodpecker in my yard.
Last summer, two came, stayed the day and were gone.
These pictures were taken on August 15, 2012 during this years visit.
Two came, stayed the day and I have not seen them since!!
They stayed on the ground the entire time,
"flickering" through the grass looking for food.
They are hard to miss,
the bright red heart on the back of his head is remarkable!!
Sharing today with Clytie at Random Hearts
Beautiful captures! A reminder that we never know when unexpected joy will appear. :)

ReplyDeleteI love the red heart on the back of their heads, what a neat little marking. I am so glad you got that shot and I am glad they returned.
ReplyDeleteThey are very loud too! You can hear them up in the trees around here. Maybe they are around, but not on the ground???
ReplyDeleteLovely pictures as usual! We had a woodpecker that stayed all day on our roof and almost drove us crazy. He pecked at a steel chimney. We tried a fire in the fireplace and he would leave but soon come back. He would start his pecking early in the morning. I actually felt like shooting him. However, eventually we were able to chase him a way. I should have got a picture.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the memory today and Blessings to you!
It is hard not to take the picture of this little handsome.
ReplyDeleteWhat else can we miss in this beautiful owrld.
There have been some here the last few days. They have such a variety of coloring and marks.
ReplyDeleteVery nice captures! Love this series!

ReplyDeleteWhat a great bird to have on your lawn. We have no woodpeckers at all in Australia - I sued to have them in my garden in the UK - and I miss them! Nice to see some again.
