The Hooded Mergansers

Swimming around Spring Lake
the Hooded Mergansers played hard to get as they often do...the boys more so than the girls.
This lake has two pedestrian bridges over it,
standing midway on the bridge made capturing these images a little easier.

The Hooded Mergansers are small ducks with a thin bill and collapsable crest
that makes the head look oversized and oblong.

Sexes are dissimilar.
For those who do not know, the female is on the left, the male on the right.

- the girls stuck together -

- it's not the cry but the flight of a duck that leads the flock to fly and follow -

  1. Hello,
They are one of my favorite ducks, the male and females are both beautiful. Great series of photos.
    Take care, enjoy your day!

  2. They're so fun to watch, but for me always notoriously difficult to photograph because they like to stay in the middle of the lake. You took beautiful photos!

  3. Actions speak louder than words…

I’ve seen hooded mergansers but the Common ones are what I see most. Great photos as usual!

  4. They have such strange eyes and of course the male is more colorful than the female.

  6. Great pics, that's neat there are bridges to get closer pics. I love their little tufts on their heads!
When Greg and I went out last weekend we actually came across a bunch of ducks that were all different kinds, usually we see the Mallards, they had a little machine that you could get corn and feed them, we enjoyed that so much we didn't get any pics but it was fun seeing them up close :)

  7. They look pretty but a tad related to Einstein. We just have plain ducks, Mallard ducks and Donald Duck in Kansas. Linda
