The Semipalmated Plover

When I took these pictures, I thought this was a Killdeer.
But after a bit of reading and research, I am fairly certain it is a Semipalmated Plover.
The two are very similar,
the Plovers are a little smaller, have a smaller stubbier bill,
breeding plovers have some orange in the bill.
The Killdeer has a much longer bill and two black breast bands.

It was a quick mover at first, difficult to photograph.
It stood still for this last picture, posing nicely for this staring at me picture!

  7. We've had a killdeer who comes to the same spot each year to lay her eggs. The spot is beside a very busy road on the farm, and in spite of being so careful so as to keep the eggs safe, something gets the eggs during the night. I felt sorry for her this year; she stood over the eggs during the daytime to keep them from getting too hot, and when the rains fell she sat there, covering them. I read the reason they are becoming fewer in number is because there are so many predators out there.

  10. I've never heard of this type of plover - I think we have piping plovers up here. I love the way he poses for you in your last shot - almost as though he is giving in and telling you to just get on with it - lol! What a cute bird!

  14. I don't believe I have heard the name of these birds at all. I must say that you got some great shots of this one and I really like the black ring around the shoulder. I liked learning about the difference between the two different birds.
    Blessings and hugs!
