Saturday Critters ~ 273 ~

The pair of Wood Ducks are still hanging around at
Lake of the Lilies
and I continue to stalk them.
The male is undeniably more beautiful than the female,
but the female has striking marking and a very pretty feather pattern.
They are a dabbling duck, and the two are always together.
My bird book states they are here year round, but I have only ever seen them in winter.
And at that, I rarely see them...having a pair close by has been exciting.

When I saw them 2 years ago,
they came out of the water and I was able to get some lovely pictures.
I guess they look more natural in the water,
but the following pictures give you a good look at all their beautiful features.
They have small legs and feet (palmate).

Maybe you will see their babies this spring. Thanks so much for linking up and sharing your post. Happy Saturday, enjoy your weekend. PS, I appreciate your visit and comment on my blog.

  4. Isn't it amazing that the female is so plain except for the tips of her wings and then all that beautiful color.

  12. They are extraordinarily beautiful!...and apparently new to my part of the world.
Are they relative to the Mandarin ducks?

  14. Lovely wood duck pictures! They are striking birds! I know that they do have an “eclipse” plumage sometimes in the summer, and they are not as showy. Thanks for sharing!
