The Mourning Dove
generally a slim bodied, long tailed dove that feeds on the ground.
On this day, the Dove selected a spot in the tree and puffed out,
trying to stay warm during one of our cold snaps.
In my yard, they spend most of their time walking around on their short, stubby legs,
their movements are quick and jerky.
Notable in these pictures are their pink feet adorned with black "nail polish".
They make the sweetest sound,
a hooting, cooing sound that is pleasant and very recognizable.
I see Mourning Doves year round,
most often in pairs and they are very easy to photograph.

ReplyDeleteI think I must have a hundred living here now. I have been giving them cracked corn. They wait in the trees when I come out waiting just like little chickens. You really got perfect pictures today. I didn't know that they had pink feet. Now I have to pay better attention. Have a lovely day.

ReplyDeleteI see them here a lot, but they are very skittish. The slightest noise or movement and they are off! Makes getting good photos difficult. Your photos are wonderful!

The Mourning Doves are one of my favorite bird species. I love those feet. It does look like they just got a pedicure. I have fond membories of the ones that nested in our front yard tree a few years ago. I would love if they returned.

ReplyDeleteStarting about next month, they will be our morning wake up call if it stays cool enough to keep the windows open. I think it’s probably mating season then (we enjoy waking up to their soft coos). He looks really pretty all puffed up to stay warm...not the way we see them here!
