Saturday Critters ~ 3 ~

Up close and personal with a...

 Northern Flicker

This is a very special visitor for me.

Over the past few years I see this woodpecker one day,
each fall and never see him again until the following year.
I thought perhaps I had missed him this year but then I saw him on December 17th.
There he was on the suet feeder and he wasn't budging.
I watched and photographed him for several minutes.

I could not get a flight shot but I wanted to share this image,
showing off his bright yellow under-carriage.
In flight, the pop of yellow is hard to miss and absolutely stunning!!
I have not seen him again, till next year my friend.

I am super excited to be joining in with Eileen over at
for Saturday Critters.

  1. Debbie, your closeups of the Yellow-shafted Flicker are awesome. It is weird you do not see it more often. I would be happy if they came to my feeder. Thanks for sharing on Saturday's Critters. Enjoy your weekend!

Merry Christmas to you and your family!

  13. This is one beautiful bird. The yellow and the red against the polka dots makes for such a wonderful contrast. Maybe one day I will get to see a Flicker.

  23. He's fabulous. We have one that visits every spring. I've named him "Woody" and he always returns to the same telephone pole to peck away every year. Never have gotten a decent picture though as I don't have very good zooming capability. Loving that "yellow" pop.
