Chasing Herons

I spend many hours, many days, chasing herons!!
They are so beautiful, so majestic, I love their color,
size and long slinky legs!!
 
I am unable to pass a small patch of water, without stopping to look for
Herons or Egrets.
 
I am obsessive.
When you know you are obsessive, are you still considered obsessive?

Fletcher Lake in Ocean Grove

Dissatisfied with those images,
the next day, September 22nd, I dragged the hubs to my favorite marina.

There were several Great Blue Herons,

doing what they always do, they avoid me.

Now I like the first two images better!
What do you guys think?

This is what he does best...

fly away!!

    They are wonderful birds!! We usually have a couple by the pond where we use to live... I never did get a picture this year of it!!

    They first shots have a nice reflection and show the heron's natural setting. The second shots highlight the heron because it's isolated on the stump. Both are really nice, just different perspectives! And, yes, they're very good at flying away!

    I love number 3 & 4! Makes me want to call him Bird Legs! They are wonderful birds and I love to see them, too. Here's to lots more happy Heron sightings!

    I too love herons...and agree with your descriptive words of the species. We have one particular one at a favorite watering hole we frequent that seems to always be there to greet us....we've even named him..."Hector the Heron".

    I think all of your shots are great but I especially love the in flight ones.
    I am hopeless at getting bird, butterfly, wasps, bees - in fact anything that moves - shots. So well done!!!

    I think all the photographs are wonderful. Such a stately bird. And....yes one is obsessive even when they admit it. That would be I.

    I think the preference of one over the other might be the settings.
    I like the second two with the blurred background best but they are all wonderful. I've never been able to photograph one. :)

    HaHa, I guess I am obsessive too. I think to be no longer obsessive, you would have to stop chasing the herons. They are beautiful and you got some awesome shots. Keep chasing away!

    I love these photos! I love these birds. How did you get such good shots of them flying away?? Whenever they fly away from me (and that's all the time!), my images are all blurred.

    What do you do to chase those birds away? Good luck with your on-going quest!! I really like the shots where the heron is standing on the post. More unusual than just standing around in the water.

    Why can the birds understand that all we want is a picture! I really like the herons on the post.

    I would not say I was obsessed with herons, but I always feel like I seen "something" when I see one.

    LOVE THESE PICTURES! Have you ever been down in Fla, when the ibex are just standing on the side of highways like statues???

    My dear friend ... just think (or maybe not -eewwww) of all the *nasty* things that people obsess over in this world ... you having an obsession w/ these beautiful birds - that's a WONDERFUL! obsession!!!

    Great pictures!!! I LOVE Herons. I lived in Las Vegas for 10 years before moving to Missouri 6 months ago.

    In Vegas Heron's are extremely rare. In fact there was only one small little wetland area where you would occasionally see one.

    I remember the first time I saw one, I pulled my car over and watched in amazement. I had no idea what it was and searched the internet to figure it out.

    Now that we live in wonderful MO, we seem them quite often. I think they are spectacular. Thank you for sharing your awesome pics!!

    Wonder if "our" herons are related?? And...knowing we're obsessed...and lingering in our obsession...makes us just a tad more nuts. But we're in good company ~ so it's all good!

    I think if you know you're obsessive, that just makes you a self-aware obsessive ...

    I like the 3rd & 4th shots where he's peering over his shoulder -there's a lot more intrigue going on there!!

    You get a lot better pictures than I ever have! I love Blue Herons and always want to photograph them but as you say they are pretty elusive.
