A Rural Thursday Blog Hop #9...The Tree Rat

I had never heard that term before..."tree rat".
I first heard it here in blog-ville, from my good friend
I always just called them squirrels...
I have a serious love/hate relationship with mine.
I love the way they look but they eat all the birdseed
and they make a mess!!
I have several in my yard, that visit everyday.
I can tell them all apart by their coloring and markings.

This guy is my favorite...I call him "red" because of his beautiful red tail.
He's making sure I know that the bird bath is empty.

Here he is snacking on some peanuts,
they're not for him but he sure thinks they are!!

This poor guy visits every day, he is missing his tail,
which makes him look a lot like a "rat" and that's what I call him!

This is "fluffy"...all one color with a really pretty fluffy tail.
He does this all the time, that's how I know it's fluffy!!

Each of us could write this rural story.
I'm sharing it with

  2. Poor little guy, I wonder what happened to his tail? A cat maybe?

They are pretty cute, Debbie, even if they are tree rats!

  3. They've discouraged me from even trying anymore...I want to do better with the birdseed - and even the plants...but they are sooo pesky and I can't win! That shot of the one guy stretching to get at your hummingbird feeder is hysterical - I mean, they are tricky dudes who will NOT be out smarted!

  10. haha! The rats always make me laugh! I've never seen one missing a tail quite like that, though. It has to be a bit difficult for him/her to balance at times.

  12. Poor little squirrel with no tail! We don't get any squirrels in our yard, and I am happy about that, but that doesn't mean there aren't some nearby. I saw a very fat one at the Desert Museum both times I went.

  14. I dunno, I like the squirrels. And the sparrows and the blackbirds. I don't think we should pick and choose who we feed at our feeders. I like it how the squirrels knock the feed down for the mourning doves who can't sit on the feeder. It all works out, everyone is happy. Including me. :) I just like everyone to come and enjoy.

  17. Squirrels haven't found their way to our yard which is in a big field. I'm sure we will have them one day. Yours are certainly cute!

  18. We have tree rats too. Our cocker spaniel just hates them. He will watch until they are really intent on eating the sunflower seeds, then he barks, just loves to watch them scramble.

  19. I bet they are a lot of fun to watch, even though they cause a bit of trouble. :)

Recently, we observed a squirrel playing with a kitten. So funny.

  23. Love this post! Cute squirrels! We have the same issues at our feeders. The birds do seem to get their fill, though. Poor guy without the tail ... at least he seems to be fairing just fine.
